The cable system is one of the most versatile components of the PrimusRS. It allows you to perform a variety of exercises with smooth, constant resistance throughout the range of motion. For example, you can use it for PNF patterns, sit to stand, pitching a ball, swinging a tennis racket, lifting from the ground, and many more functional exercises.
Here, we’ll show you how to set up the cable system for any of your testing or treatment applications. Watch the video below for a step by step guide to using the PrimusRS cable system.
4 Steps to Set Up the Cable System (191) on PrimusRS
To set up the cable system on your PrimusRS, follow these steps:
- Unlock shaft
- Position workhead upright (#1 position)
- Align the cable tool (191) to the appropriate position
- Balance the cable tool and slowly rotate the shaft until the tool drops in (do not pull up on the shaft while performing this step)
- Twist outside lever to lock into place
Once the cable system in locked into the workhead, you can raise or lower the workhead to the desired height, tilt to the desired angle, and attach any of the compatible tools for your exercise.
During use, ensure that the cable moves straight out from tool, not pulling up or down or at an angle of more than 30 degrees. If the patient’s movement pulls the cable at an angle, simply reposition the workhead so the cable moves in the desired direction.
Exercises with the Cable System
With the cable system, you can do several upper and lower extremity exercises, ADL simulations, job tasks, and sports movements. Below are some of the most popular cable system exercises used in clinics.
Lower extremity cable exercises
- Closed chain knee exercises, such as terminal knee extension
- Hip flexion, extension, abduction, and adduction
- Gait training and balance
- Assisted walking, lunges, and beam steps
- Sit to stand
- Power jumps
- Push up assistance

Upper extremity cable exercises
- Shoulder internal/external rotation and flexion/extension
- Bicep curls
- PNF patterns
- Swinging a baseball bat, tennis racket, or golf club
- Throwing a ball
- Swinging a hammer or axe
- Simulate push/pull
- Simulate starting a lawn mower, snow blower, or similar machine

Compatible Attachments
Many of the PrimusRS attachments work with the cable system by attaching to the 191 tool. Choose your attachment based on the task you’re simulating and keep patients engaged with a variety of simulated activities, grips, and difficulty levels. These PrimusRS attachments are designed to use with the cable system by connecting to the 191 tool:
- Thigh strap
- Large thigh strap (or waist strap)
- Ankle strap (or wrist strap)
- Arm strap
- Baseball bat
